Catnip is a special Cat Bot feature that unlocks the Cat Mafia and gives temporary boosts and progression rewards.
Unlocking Catnip/Cat Mafia
After the user has caught at least 50 cats in total, there is a 1/11 chance that a button with the text "You see a shadow..." will appear on a catch. Clicking this button will make a dialogue appear, which grants instructions on how to access the Cat Mafia. If one misses it, they can still find the button by successfully rolling the 1/11 chance again. After that, The Cat Mafia can be accessed by running the /catnip command.
Overview
Catnip is a roguelite prestige system where one can pay cats and complete bounties to join and ascend the ranks of the Cat Mafia.
When catnip activates, it will be indicated in the catch message, e.g.:
"
catnip worked! your cat was doubled by catnip!!1!"
When catnip runs out, the following text will be included with the next catch:
"
Your catnip expired! Run /catnip to get more."
Catnip will still work alongside prism boosts and blessings. Several perks can be unlocked as one levels up, each providing passive benefits to greatly improve their catches. Catnip only lasts for a limited amount of time and will need to be repurchased after it expires.
Catnip perks start working whenever you start bounties, and only stop working after the full level duration is up, or the next level's bounties are started. This means if you complete the bounties and pay up you are safe to use your perks until they run out without any risk of levelling down.
Additionally after you pay up (or fail a level), you don't have to start the next level's bounties until you wish to with no time limit.
For example:
- You start level 3 (3h long), at which point your perks and bounties activate.
- You complete the bounties after 1 hour, and pay up 30 minutes later and select a new perk.
- You can still use your perks (including the one you just got) for the remaining 1.5 hours.
- Starting the next level before the 1.5 hours are up will reset the timer, essentially making you lose that reward time. There is a warning if you try to do this.
- At this point, you can instead also wait and start the next level a few weeks later without any issues.
Upon finishing level 10, it instead restarts without letting you pick a perk. That is due to it being the last level: the bounties will be of the same difficulty, and you will have a fresh 24 hour timer. This means the maximum amount of perks one can have is 9.
Tip
The slower the spawn timings are in your server, the more difficult it is to rank up.
Levels
Cost - Approximate pay-up cost in value.
Duration - How long do you have to complete the bounties. Also how long the perks will be active for.
Difficulty (Diff) - Average amount of catches completing a bounty will take.
Bounties - Amount of bounties on the level (+1 means there is a bonus bounty).
Rarities - The chance for a perk (out of 3 perks) to be a rarity. Note that this refers to the level you just reached, not the level that you finished. E.g. if you finish level 1, you get the perk rarities from level 2.

Bounties
Bounties are tasks that need to be completed in order to proceed to the next level.
Users can begin new bounties upon completion of the previous set, but they will lose the remaining perk time on that level. The Catnip timer will reset when a new level begins. Catches will still count towards bounties if you say "cat" within 5 seconds after the original catcher (during a rain, the window is 1 second).
Prisms, catnip perks, or blessings do not count towards bounty progress (e.g. a doubled catch by a blessing still counts as one cat for the bounty).
Bounty Math
\text{variance}=\text{random}\left(0.85,~1.15\right)~~~~\text{if it is a normal bounty}\\\text{variance}=1.5\cdot\text{random}\left(0.85,~1.15\right)~~~~\text{if it is a bonus bounty}
Bounty Difficulty is based on the level, as seen in the table above, where the Bounty Difficulty value used in calculations below are the Diff value from the level you are currently on.
There are three different kinds of bounties one may receive:
-
Catch X cats:
X=\text{round}\left(\frac{\text{bounty difficulty}\cdot\text{variance}}{2}\right) -
Catch X type cats:
- Choose a random cat type.
-
The average amount of catches which would be needed is as close as possible to Bounty Difficulty.\text{base amount}=\text{bounty difficulty}\cdot\text{the chance of chosen cat type} -
This adds some variance.X=\text{round}\left(\text{base amount}\cdot\text{variance}\right) - Start over if X < 4 (only on levels 5+)
-
Catch X type or rarer cats:
-
Choose a random cat type.
-
Calculate the chance that this type or above spawns -
Eligibile Chance. -
\text{base amount}=\text{round}\left(\text{base difficulty}\cdot\text{eligible chance}\right)The average amount of catches which would be needed is as close as possible to Bounty Difficulty.
-
Start over if the rounding changed value by more than 20%.
-
X=\text{round}\left(\text{base amount}\cdot\text{variance}\right),~~~~\text{if}~~X<1~~\text{then}~~X=1For all bounties, start over if X is too big.
-
Catnip Cost Math
This process is very similar to pack rewards:
- Get the cost value from the level where the cost appears.
- Pick a random possible cat type (every possible cat type has the same chance of being chosen).
- Find out the number of cats:
\frac{\text{level cost value}}{\text{cat type value}},~~~~\text{with the whole part being the guaranteed cost}
- For the fractional part, it gets rounded.
- For example,
41.68turns to42.
- For example,
Tip
Bonus bounties don't have to be completed to complete the level and they disappear if you skip them, but they reward you with the ability to reroll one perk of your choosing. Rerolling a perk lets you redo the perk picking (i.e. you pick a new perk out of random 3, then an old perk to be replaced). These perks are picked from the pool of the level you are on at reroll time, instead of whichever level you are rerolling.
Perks
Perks are abilities one will receive upon beating a level. The user will have the choice between three perks. These perks can vary in rarity based on the level's weights (see table above), with higher rarities providing better values. The further the user is in the mafia, the more likely it is for a rarer perk to appear. If one fails to complete a bounty, their most recent perk will be lost.
Triple catches are shown with double catnip emojis and double boosts are shown with double prism emojis.
The rarity icons are
for common,
for uncommon,
for rare,
for epic, and
for legendary.

The Voting Booster duration bonus is your voting streak turned into minutes. Every number in your streak over 100 will give half as many minutes, over 200 will give a third as many, etc.
If you have multiple of the same perk, the chances stack by adding up and caps at a guaranteed chance.
Note that Voting Booster and Purrcise Catcher cannot be stacked.
Bonus Catcher perk minigame chance boost only applies for catchers where you are the first catcher (i.e. not late).
Characters
There are a total of 9 different characters one will meet while ranking up through the 10 levels of the mafia. Each level has a different character with the sole exception of the 10th level, where the first character makes a reappearance. Each character has a different ranking in the mafia, and the level will be obtained by the user upon defeating them.
Each character has lines of dialogue that will be shown once certain actions are taken: meeting the character for the first time, checking on them, leveling up, and leveling down. All characters have more than one default message, but some have additional level up messages, too. All of these messages for the respective characters and sections are randomized, with equal chances of each message appearing.

Cutscenes
After completing high levels, cutscenes appear. Once the cutscene is complete, run /catnip again. This allows you to choose a perk from the menu.
Completing Level 7
You feel satisfied with yourself. I just defeated the Godfather, Bailey! I'm on top of the world now!Little did you know, it was foolish to believe it was over just yet.
You stare Bailey down, and realize just how bizarre he is. He's very large for a cat... he wags his tail... he just feels wrong. But then, you hear it.
Bark! Bark!
Oh no.
After "RUN!" button pressed:
You immediately run. You know that he will probably be able to outpace you, but you do have a bit of a head start.
There's a split in the alley.
Left would lead to the hideout, but you'll never get there in time.
Right, however, leads to a dead end.
Which way do you go?
If "Left" button pressed:
You dash to the left. You can see the cat door ahead, but you'll never make it out in time.
You call out for help, and think back to all of those people you defeated.
Whiskers, the Lucians, Jinx, Jeremy, Sofia.
Would any of them be willing to save you?
If "Right" button pressed:
You dash to the right. As you turn the corner and approach the dead end, you realize that while he may go faster, you can jump higher.
You back up against the wall, wait for him to approach... and jump.
You get over him, and run the other way. With a head start, you can get into the hideout.
But Bailey isn't done yet.
He's trying to break in. You think back to all of those people you defeated.
Whiskers, the Lucians, Jinx, Jeremy, Sofia.
Would any of them be willing to save you?
After "Next" button pressed:
You see Jinx come out first. Whiskers is just behind him.
Jeremy doesn't take much longer. The Lucians come out too, though reluctantly.
Finally, Sofia scowls and approaches.
Bailey knew he could take down one cat. Two wouldn't be that hard. But seven..?
"This isn't the end of this..."
Bailey puts his head down, and scampers off. But you aren't done.
You and your crew chase after him. He runs, until you corner him. He goes into the building behind him... but it's the Cat Police Station.
As you return to your hideout, you hear a howl in the distance.
Demonic Achievement Unlocked
Completing Level 10
Why? What do you gain from this? What's the point? You've gone too far. You defeated Bailey, and I was proud of you for that.
But you kept going. Just for slightly more cats.
You never cared about the people. It was all for you.
After "Next" button pressed:
I got too greedy myself. I took over the mafia far too young.
I wanted more, and more, and more. But I never went as far as you did.
I took over catnip production, and took so much for myself.
Eventually, though, someone took away my catnip.
And I realized how I had taken so much catnip, that the whole world was limited to about 4 doses a week."""
After "Next" button pressed again:
But you. You've left nothing for the others. You've made the most powerful catnip, but at what cost?
I can't stop you. No one can. I guess the only question is: will you stay here to torment us? Or fight on, against the world itself?
[More content coming soon! Congrats on actually making it to level 10, that's quite a feat.]
If "Stop" button pressed:
...Really? I thought you would continue your path of destruction.
So fine. Continue to torment us. You've won. Are you happy now?
Achievement Unlocked
If "Continue" button pressed (grayed out):

- Before catnip, there used to be a mechanic called "cataine" which had a different story involving the Dog Mafia prior to October 24th, 2025.
- Users cannot surpass level 10 yet, however, there is an unused level 11 in Cat Bot's files with no character:

30% - During the development process, there was an idea to add an X Battlepass XP per catch and a guaranteed doubling perk but it was later scrapped.
- TheTrashCell, the artist and writer for the update, revealed these 2 images before catnip was officially released:

- Whiskers is a Fine cat who was designed for the plot twist for the catnip story, that being looking like a beginner then revealing himself as the final boss.
- Lucian Jr. is the son of Lucian; he is explained to be a "typical early level bandit type character" (TheTrashCell). Lucian Jr. is roughly inspired by "Sir Maximus II" from OMOKAT's 2020 horror role-playing game, Omori.
- Jinx is TheTrashCell's favorite character. TheTrashCell made a whole entry for Jinx, containing this list of character traits: "little gremlin", "super chill", "uses modern slang", "loves sombrero hats", "lives a minimalist nomadic lifestyle", "moderate catnip user", "fan favourite", "probably gay or something to resonate with the audience", "doesn't take anything seriously", "laughs at all the other cats in the cat mafia who do take things seriously", and "‘dont jinx it'".
- Jinx's name stems from when nathancrazy. - the main developer of the Catnip Update - went to Cat Stand's (Cat Bot's support server) "#catching2" channel and requested for cat name suggestions for an unknown reason at that time, now known to be for Jinx's name. In response to nathancrazy.'s request, a user named "helicopterbirb" responded with "Jinx", the name of their cat.
- Jeremy is from an April Fools remake of a small sandbox game called "Photon".
- His lore is complex; to sum it up, milenakos (creator of Cat Bot, referred to as Lia) used to make Cell Machine (a "zero player game" created by Sam Hogan) content in the past. Two users, blendigoose and k_lemon, spent time in the Cell Machine community and worked together to make a game called "Photon". In 2024, an April Fool's version of the game called "Photon: Dimensions" was created, and Jeremy was the main character. TheTrashCell created the OST for the game, which includes a bonus song (the first of four) called "Jeremy".
- The first two lines of the song are the exact words Jeremy says for his first default dialogue.
- The origin of the joke of Jeremy being added to Cat Bot started when 10 people assembled in a group and spammed milenakos to get Jeremy added to Cat Bot, which never occurred until the release of the Catnip Update over a year later.
- After the new cat icons for Cat Bot were released, a song named "Cat Bot Icons" was also created, which contains Jeremy singing about how he wants to be added to Cat Bot, followed by a ton of swearing.
- Jeremy's introduction, second default, and third default dialogues come from lines in this song. This song is allegedly lost media, and "we should all collectively agree it doesn't exist" (TheTrashCell).

- Lucian is the father of Lucian Jr., and is "another bandit-type character" (TheTrashCell). His quote, "Hello. My name is Lucian. You beat my son. Prepare to die." is a reference to a quote from "Inigo Montoya"—a character from Rob Reiner's 1987 film The Princess Bride. The quote is as follows: "Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."
- Lucian is roughly inspired by "Sir Maximus" from OMOKAT's 2020 horror role-playing game, Omori.
- Sofia, as stated by nathancrazy. (the main developer of the Catnip Update), is "WOKE mafia" and "Fancy, yet unamused".
- Bailey is a golden retriever.
- Wilson's quote about "the paws" is a reference to the Spiderman kingpin Mets meme.
- Lalo is a reference to "Lalo Salamanca" from Vince Gilligan's and Peter Gould's 2015-2022 television series Better Call Saul. Every one of his quotes is a slightly modified or the original quote said by Lalo Salamanca. The whole idea about the Catnip Update was to justify adding Lalo as a Cat Bot character. This means the update was an elaborately designed scheme created by TheTrashCell just to get Lalo added to Cat Bot.
- There is a 1% chance Jeremy's icon appears as

If both bonuses fail, it awards the normal amount of cats, and only if all checks fail and you have the Gambling Catcher perk completely does the catch return zero cats. For example, two Rainy Catcher perks will have their percentage chances added together.
- On November 1st, 2025, Rainy Catcher replaced Slow Catcher in Catnip v1.1 likely due to fast catching servers, many catnip levels also got rebalanced.
