Backstory

What led to the creation of Cat Bot.

Game Maker's Toolkit Game Jam 2020 "Out Of Control" (GMTK Game Jam)

Game Maker's Toolkit Game Jam is an annual event hosted on itch.io whose topic was "Out Of Control" in 2020. Participants had to code and submit a game within 48 hours, where there was no way to control what is happening in the game.

Sam Hogan and Cell Machine

Sam Hogan, a YouTuber who has participated in other Game Jams, was one of the participants in GMTK Game Jam 2020. He decided to code a cellular automata game, where you couldn't control the simulation after it started. This fits in the "Out Of Control" topic.

He made a video about the process of the game creation which you can watch here.

Cell Machine Mystic Mod (CMMM)

Approximately 5 months after Sam Hogan's game was done, two people: Mystic and Snazz, made Cell Machine Mystic Mod, which was a remake for Cell Machine which added sandbox to the game. Eventually, Lia Milenakos, the future developer of Cat Bot and CMMM YouTuber, and TheTrashCell, another CMMM YouTuber and the future artist for Cat Bot, have joined the official CMMM Discord Server.

7 months after the creation of the official CMMM Discord server, TheTrashCell made his own server dedicated to CMMM, called The Trash Server, and Lia Milenakos was one of the people who joined it.

One day, Trash added the Staring Cat sticker (and similar ones), which was this image:

The first occurrence of the Staring Cat was as a wallpaper for Windows that Trash made.

On November 16th 2021, the members of The Trash Server created a chain, where those stickers were constantly spammed and it lasted over 5000 messages. You can see the chain here.

Cat Stand

Lia Milenakos, inspired by the cat chain, created Cat Stand, with an idea in her mind of creating Cat Bot, not knowing what it will do yet. Some people from The Trash Server joined it, most of them are OGs/mods there currently.

History

What has happened since the creation of Cat Bot, April 21st 2022.

First days

Most of the most commonly used features have been created.

April 21st, 2022

The day when Cat Bot was created.

• 8 hours after the creation of Cat Stand, Cat Bot started spawning its first cats. There have been no emojis, no catching time, only plain usernames, and no stylized images for the cat types.
  The first cat that has been caught is the Good cat.
  
• 11 hours after the creation of Cat Stand, the first commands were added:
  
• 16 hours after the creation of Cat Stand, the database was added, this means all cats were now saved.

April 22nd, 2022

• Cats got their emojis.
• Database was nuked.
• Admin commands have been added.
  
• First stylised cat images have been created, although they have never been used, another version of them were added later on August 7th, 2024.
  

April 23rd, 2022

• Most of the bugs have been fixed.
• More commands have been added.

Big Updates

The history of the biggest Cat Bot updates, AKA updates that either added or removed a big mechanic, significantly altering Cat Bot in some way.

May 7th, 2022 "Achievement Update #1"

• On May 7th 2022 first 13 achievements have been added:

May 3rd, 2022 "da great cat reset" and "The Per-Server Update"

Because originally Cat Bot's inventories were global, the database was reset when adding it to The Trash Server. There howerver were issues, so the reset was undone and the bot was removed from The Trash Server, and no resets occurred since. This means a cat caught on April 22nd, 2022, would still be around.

August 22nd, 2022 "Rain First Added"

Originally you could only start a short 1 minute rain, a normal 5 minute rain, or a long 10 minute rain.

The menu looked like this which looks very similar to the menu we have now:

Cats only spawned in 1 second intervals and said "this concludes the cat rain.".

September 19th, 2022? "Cat Type Update"

9 new cat types were added:

• Baby
• Sus
• Rickroll (originally CatAstley)
• Reverse
• 8-Bit
• Corrupt
• Trash (originally TheTrashCell)
• Real
• eGirl

December 23rd, 2022 "Open Source Update"

• Cat Bot was added to GitHub which you can find here.
• Every single code version since then is preserved in Git history.

January-Feburary 2023 "Cat Rain Removal"

Old cat rains didn't transfer over because the database relating to it got deleted as well.

January 23rd, 2023 "Battlepass Update #1"

• Added battlepass (AKA cat battlepass). This information is based on the GitHub commit.
• You had to do a task for each one to pass the level and to get a reward.
• It had 32 levels from 24 levels (including the 2 joke levels in both) on August 26th, 2023 and the alternate name was changed to cattlepass.

The old Cattlepass has been completely removed from Cat Bot due to the second battlepass update. You can read more about it in the Old Cattlepass page.

January 28th, 2023 "Voting Update"

• Added the ability to vote for Cat Bot on Top.gg to get 5 Fine cats.

• More rewards were added on January 27th 2024.
• Cat Bot switched to Wumpus.store on February 3rd 2024.
• Top.gg was added back on March 20th 2024.
• Wumpus.store was shutdown so Cat Bot switched to being Top.gg-only again on May 15th 2024.
• Cat Bot switched to a streak system on January 1st 2025.

The old voting system has been completely removed from Cat Bot due to the second battlepass update. You can read more about it in the Voting page.

March 20th 2023 "Fake Cat Rain Added/Removal"

You got 5/25/50 Fine cats depending on the type.

July 9th, 2023 "The Great Command Rename"

• /achs was renamed to /achievements.
• /inv was renamed to /inventory.
• /donate was renamed to /gift.
• /force was renamed to /forcespawn.
• /summon was renamed to /givecat.
• /giveach was renamed to /giveachievement.
• /nerdmode was renamed to /preventcatch.

September 30th, 2023 and October 4th, 2023 "Cataine Update #1/Story Mode Update #1 and #2"

• Cataine has been added
  The old Cataine was originally bumping the rarity of the cat you caught, similarly to the current prisms.
  
• Cataine was changed to double the cat you caught in the 2nd update.
  
• Some Cataine related achievements have also been added.

Cataine has been completely removed from Cat Bot due to the Catnip update. You can read more about Cataine in the The Dark Market page.

June 26th, 2024 "Webhook Update"

Cat Bot had needed "Manage Webhooks" to /setup, it was added due to catching bugs but caused the "Ping Reply" achievement to not work until it was removed.

August 6th, 2024 "Rain Readded"

You could still only start a typed rain: a short 2 minute rain, a normal 10 minute rain, or a long 20 minute rain.

August 10th, 2024 "Achievement Update #2"

• More achievements have been added:

This also lists the achievements that have been added between the achievement update #1 and #2.

• Renamed Unfair category to Hard.
• Added the Silly catgory.
• More commands that are needed for those achievements have been added.

November 4th, 2024 "Cat Prism Update"

• Cat Prisms have been added, which boosted the rarities of the cats you caught the same way the old Cataine was implemented.

  

• Originally the limit was 5 prisms per user and 25 prisms per server, later both limits got extended to 520 on April 1st 2025.

• Cat Prisms are named using the NATO phonetic alphabet with a number between 2-20 for the 27th prism and above.

January 1st, 2025 "Battlepass Update #2"

• Cattlepass seasons have been added, with the seasons changing every month.
• Each season there are 30 main levels and infinite amount of extra levels, though reaching level 50 is practically almost impossible.
• You are given 3 tasks, which update 12 hours after finishing them.

February 28th, 2025 "Packs Update"

• Packs have been introduced in Cattlepass Season 3 and had been used in future Cattlepass seasons.
• Different packs of different types contain different amounts of different cat types.

October 24th, 2025 "Catnip Update"

• Cataine was replaced by Catnip.
• Dog Mafia has been replaced by Cat Mafia with bounties.
• Perks have been added.

February 28th, 2026 "Stock Market Update"

• Stock Market has been added along with Cattlepass Season 15 with two new commands ( /stocks and /portfolio).
• You can sell and buy stocks in Prism, Catnip, Cattlepass, Achievements and Rain respectively.
• To be able to get coins, you need to deposit packs.
• 3 new achievements got added due to this update.

The Stock Market has been completely removed from Cat Bot. You can read more about the Stock Market in the Stock Market page.

April 6th, 2026 "Bake.gg Collab"

• The 1st collab happened, along with a command (/bakery) and achievement (Pro Baker).
• You can get cookies in /cookie and coffee in /brew and catch cats to complete your order.
• The new exclusive pack was added (Chef pack) which is the first unlimited special pack.

May 14th, 2026 "Stock Market Removed"

• According to Lia, the system was confusing, unfun and had many flaws.
• Everyone was refunded at the rate of 1 Stone pack for every 100 coins. Owned stocks were also converted into Stone packs at a 1:1 ratio.
• Rest in peace

June 26th, 2026 "CATCHING UPDATE"

• You can now get cats for late catching.
• Bonus cats were added with unique minigames.
• Both are reflected in rain summaries.

August 5th, 2026 "Stock Market Readded"

Stock market is back from the grave.

• It now uses an automatic price algorithm instead of manual orders.
• Rewards are now faster.
• No more withdraw fee.

September 11th, 2026 "Stock Market Reremoved"

• This time for an unknown reason.

September 13th, 2026 "Achievement Update #3"

Also known as Achievements V3.

• Added 10 achievements:

• Removed 3 achievements:

• Changed the Cat Hunt, Random, Hard, and Hidden categories into the Catching, Economy, Social, Gambling and Minigames categories completely reorganizing some achievements.
• Made achievements branching instead of a list.
• Added the Museum category for deleted achievements.

October 5th 2026 "Server Admin Update"

• Removed: /forcespawn, /giveachievement, /givecat, /forcespawn was readded the following day.
  • Lia heard many stories of people abusing them and ruining the experience for everyone.
• Added: /swap
• /settings was updated to instead be a modal with checkboxes. Removed:
  • Cat Bot reactions
  • Cat Bot responses
  • Mute achievements
  • Auto-delete achievements
  • Catnip

November 5th, 2026 "Commands Update"

• The goal of this was to remove bloat and categorize stuff better

  Removals:

Groups: Supporter, mod, admin.

• Basically instead of /customcat and /setup its now /supporter customcat and /mod setup.
• Due to a Discord limitation you can no longer individually set perm overrides for them (only for the whole group).

Redesigns

Redesigns that Cat Bot has had in it's lifetime.

June 20th, 2024 "Cat Redesign"

• Before the cat emojis were changed, the sprites were hand drawn by Lia Milenakos. Images of the old sprites can still be found here.
• After the redesign, the regular AND event sprites were hand drawn by TheTrashCell instead.

August 7th, 2024 "Unique Cat Spawn Images"

• Previously, Cat Bot used to only have 1 cat image (the Staring cat) for all cat types, but after this update, every cat type has it’s own spawn image.

May 28th, 2025 "Achievement Redesign"

• The achievement emojis were changed from to . The old emojis were made by Milenakos and the new emojis are made by TheTrashCell.

June 1st, 2025 "Pack Redesign"

• Before the pack emojis were changed, the sprites were hand drawn by Aflyde. After the pack design update, the sprites were hand drawn by TheTrashCell instead, the same person who made the new cat and achievement emoji designs.

Miscellaneous

• Bugfixes happen constantly.
• Sometimes random small, new features bring new achievements with them outside of big updates.

Little references in Cat Bot.

CelLua

CelLua is one of the most popular CMMM remakes. Since both Cat Bot and CMMM fans were playing Cellua at the same time, and a lot of CMMM and CelLua players were playing Cat Bot too, it lead to the creation of this achievement.

Cancer

This achievement was added due to Mystic refusing to add more cells to CMMM. He said "new cells cause cancer", which quickly became a popular phrase and a common reply to all questions about new cells. To get this achievement while it was in Cat Bot, you had to say that phrase.

fUwU

Fowo was one of the members of the official CelLua Discord server. They pirated CMMM v4 (it was a paid version of CMMM at that time) and started spreading it, and blackmailed Mystic so he makes it free. They were just an annoying person in general too. Due to their behaviour, the word "fowo" was blocked by automod in The Trash Server, and to get the achievement, you had to say "fowo" because of uwu and owo (cat faces) in the names of the achievement and in the word you had to say.

Please do not the cat

This achievement was added due to a meme with a cat, which says "Please do not the cat":

It is an edited image from one of the WikiHow articles.

And they don't stop coming

This is the reference to the song All Star by Smash Mouth, specifically to the line:

Well the years start coming and they don't stop coming.

This song has been used in the movie Shrek (2001).

Cookie Clicker and Lucky

The Cookie Clicker achievement is a reference to a popular browser game Cookie Clicker. The /cookie command is an oversimplified version of the original Cookie Clicker. The achievement Lucky is also a reference to Cookie Clicker.

Sussy

This achievement is a reference to the game Among Us made by Innersloth, which caused the word "suspicious" to slowly get shortened to "sus". In the game people often call impostors suspicious people. The Sus cat represents the character from the game, that is why you have to say a variation of sus to it to get the achievement.

Bwomp

This achievement is a reference to the song Blast Processing by Waterflame used in the level of the same name in the game Geometry Dash made by RobTop, specifically to the bwomp sound you hear while running /tiktok text:bwomp.

Perfectly balanced

The name Perfectly balanced and the description of the achievement as all things should be is a reference to the line Thanos says in the movie Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and to the meme that appeared because of that line.

LETS GO GAMBLING and GOD DANGIT

Those 2 achievements reference a gambling meme with a stickman, that says "Let's go gambling!" that continues spinning the slots machine and constantly losing and saying "Aw dang it!" and continuing. You can see it here.

Silly and Blep/Bleh

Widely known cats with unknown origins.

V1;

This came from a Fullo video where Fullo says "Why use V1?" because of the length of the level code version, which can be found here.

Indev

This came from a Cell Machine game with the same name, which can be found here.

Xnopyt

An Urban Dictionary term, which means 'to suddenly disintegrate at the thought of something', originated from this video and the meme that was made from it.

Car

A reference to CMMM, specifically to a mover pushing a push cell into the trash cell.

Rugpull

A reference to the stock market and the term for a form of exit scam.

9 + 10

A reference to an old internet meme where a kid answers "21" to "What's 9 + 10?". To get the achievement, you have to land exactly on that number.

All or Nothing

The description is a reference to a meme where Luigi wins at games like Mario Party and Mario Kart by doing absolutely nothing. Likewise, you have to do nothing aside from starting the game and betting to get the achievement.

Weekly Demon

A reference to the weekly demons in Geometry Dash.

Minigames

Some of the sentences are references to Butcher Vanity and the "You, me, gas station. What are we getting for dinner?" one is a reference to a YouTube video.

Incidents

Different problems Cat Bot faced.

• September 22nd, 2022 - Cat Bot's Replit ID got banned on Cloudflare, Lia exhausted all Replit IDs by doing self-unbans before one was successful.
• October 5th, 2022 - Cat Bot used prefix commands, and cat!summon (which was essentially /givecat) was a command which existed. And because text commands don't have slash command restrictions, you could put a 1989 or 3989 character long number in it. However, since Cat Bot moved to slash commands, there was the integer limit (-2,147,483,648 to 2,147,483,647) which is 1979 or 3979 characters less than the prefix command limit, so 4 with 832 zeros (which is 4 ⋅ 10⁸³² or 40 sexseptuaginaducentillion) cats created before slash commands were added were stuck in limbo until this day, when a database migration removed htem.
• Mid-late November 2022 - The Cat Bot servers, which were located in Germany at that time, got flooded. Due to this, Cat Bot went offline for more than 2 weeks.
• February 21st, 2023 - Authorities seized one of the Cat Bot hosting servers, however, Cat Bot was already on a different host at that time. Milenakos also quite firmly believe this was faked by mythicalnodes to exit scam in some way.
  
• October 21st, 2023 - Cat Bot got banned from Cat Stand by a former mod because "they wanted to joke". This caused Cat Bot to go offline for a few hours because at that time it was dependent on Cat Stand and it was using the server emojis instead of the built-in emojis.
• March 4th, 2025 - Lia tried using Cat Bot to calculate 2 to the power of 20²⁰ minus 11 (2^{104857600000000000000000000} - 11 or around 2 to the power of 100 septillion misinterpreted as 100 quintillion) because she saw a YouTube video named "You Can't Solve This | An Impossible Exponential Challenge" with a thumbnail of 2²⁰ - 11 and 1-UP-ed that challenge after Cat Bot's successful calculation, which completely ate the entire CPU and caused it to go offline. So the bot had to fully restart to free the CPU space up.
• April-May 2025 - Cat Bot was often going offline for 10+ hours due to Discord rate limits and inability to restart the bot.
• January 23rd to 25th, 2026 - Cat Bot was often going offline due to rate spikes.

Trivia

• The first server Cat Bot was invited to besides Cat Stand was named "банан" which is translated to "banana" from Russian. It got invited there when Cat Bot wasn't public yet.
• The first ever Ultimate cat has been caught 2 hours before "da great cat reset". There was no eGirl cat type at that time yet and Ultimate was the rarest cat type.
• Cat Bot reached 100 servers 3 days after public release (getting added to Top.gg).
• You used to get only 5 Fine cats for voting on Top.gg, then 5 Good cats, then random cats, then XP for battlepass. Refer to the Voting and Cattlepass pages.
